Buying Guide

Buying Guide

Buying roll-forming equipment is a significant investment, and knowing what to look for can make all the difference. From choosing the right machine and profiles to understanding installation, training, service, and ongoing support, there's a lot to consider.

We've been on the buyer's side of the decision ourselves. That experience is why we believe in straightforward answers and helping you understand exactly what you're investing in before you buy.

Below are answers to some of the most common questions we hear from customers considering roll-forming equipment.

  • Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I know when volume justifies a machine?

The decision isn't based on volume alone. It's about whether bringing production in-house can improve your margins, shorten lead times, reduce freight and delivery costs, and give you greater control over your production schedule.

Consider how much finished material you currently purchase, how consistently you use it, your available space and staffing, and the potential savings of purchasing coil and producing panels yourself.

There may also be ongoing tax advantages in states such as Texas. Qualifying businesses may be able to purchase raw materials used in manufacturing products for sale, such as steel coil, without paying sales tax, rather than purchasing a finished product subject to tax. Eligibility and exemptions vary by state and business use, so customers should consult their tax professional or state tax authority.

We can help you look at the full picture—equipment investment, material cost, production volume, lead times, freight, and potential savings—to determine whether bringing roll forming in-house makes sense for your operation.

Will the machine run on US power?

Yes. Our machines are typically set up for U.S. 3-phase, 60 Hz, 480V power. Other U.S. power configurations can be selected when ordering, and we can customize the machine to your preferred power requirements.

Where can I see one run?

One of the best ways to feel confident in your equipment investment is to see it operate firsthand. Roll Worx equipment is in operation at Superior SteelWorx in the Houston area, and we welcome prospective customers to schedule a visit, see the equipment at work, and ask questions before making a decision.

    What does the price include?

Roll Worx quotes include the machine, a manual decoiler, controls, rigging guidance, startup, and operator training. A hydraulic decoiler is not included but is available as an option. Freight to your shop is not included. Tariffs, customs brokerage, and related import requirements are taken care of for you, including on custom-ordered machines.

    What happens when something breaks?

You call Houston. We stock wear parts and the common electrical components (PLC, inverter, encoder, contactors, blades), and we run the same machines in our own shop, so the person on the phone has fixed it before.

    How long is lead time?

In-stock machines ship from Houston in days. Built-to-order configurations, such as a custom profile pair or a wide slitting line, run 90 to 120 days plus ocean freight.

    New or used?

Used domestic machines from Bradbury, Samco, or ASC can be a good option if you can inspect the machine and find the tooling you need. However, if you purchase a used U.S.-made machine and need new tooling, the cost of that tooling can typically be more than purchasing a new machine from Roll Worx.

Is the machine UL listed and OSHA compliant?

Components are from UL-recognized manufacturers (Delta, Omron, Schneider, Siemens, and Panasonic) and machines ship with guarded drives, guarded shears, and E-stops. Full-panel UL listing is available on request.
